Evolution and Thought

New Nonfiction Studies Evolution As A Series Of Human Inventions

SALT LAKE CITY – In his new book, Evolution and Thought: Why We Think the Way We Do (published by AuthorHouse), Roger Bourke White Jr. delves into history for a look at evolution, examining past stages of human development to conclude that humans have been finely tuned as a species to fit a specific environment. White shows that the way we currently think is rooted in our past evolutionary stages and explains how these impact our decision making processes today.

Evolution and Thought outlines the three features that set us apart from other organisms: our language skills, our use of tools, and our ability to assist in childbirth and development. These three accomplishments work together to make our lives easier and create room for more growth and more inventions as a species.

White explains human evolution in easy to understand terms. He says evolution can be seen as a series of inventions that either work or don’t. Our advanced language skills are an invention, and their impact on human life has been substantial. Language made our bigger brain valuable, not a wasted investment. This invention and evolution of language prepared us to take the next step as a species: civilization. For example: We build hospitals (tool use) to help mothers have babies (assisted childbirth) and there is a lot of talking while that happens (language use).

Throughout Evolution and Thought, White goes back in time and talks about the Neolithic Village, the Agricultural and Industrial ages and how each stage of our history as humans requires different thinking methods. He suggests that our current advanced stage in life, the Information Age, is pushing us to think and act in a completely different way.

In explaining the human condition, White helps readers understand why humans act the way they do. Evolution and Thought is a refreshing look at human behavior showing that human emotions are not unexplainable mysteries, but practical ways of thinking that worked well for thousands of generations of Stone Age living.
