Pictures from Portland
Folio 1

by Roger Bourke White Jr., July 2005

In June I journeyed from Salt Lake City to Portland, Oregon to attend an ESL training class that would get me a CELTA certificate -- a widely recognized certificate of ESL teaching proficiency. Portland proved to be a very photogenic place, as these pictures show...

Mount Saint Helens

Mount Saint Helens is alive and well, thank you. This is a shot of a small eruption taken at sunset on a thunderstormy evening.

The road to Portland: Columbia River Gorge

This is a squirrel at one of the rest stops along the Columbia River on the border between Oregon and Washington. Here the Interstate system is following the old Oregon Trail.
These fellas are cute, but watch out! They will give you a serious nip if you tease them.
An odd trailer, seen at this same rest stop.

The Pacific Coast

This is Cannon Beach, an hour west of Portland, on the Pacific coast of Oregon. This area is stormy most of the year. Portland is protected from the full impact of this weather by part of the Cascade Mountain range.
More of Cannon Beach. It was cool, windy and rainy. From what I understand, that's the weather most of the time there.
The rain brings moss. What I noticed here was that the tree didn't like the moss. The moss clings to the older, deader parts of the tree. Somehow, the live tree bark has some way of repelling the moss -- an active immune system on the outside of the tree... interesting.

Homes in Portland

Homes in Portland tend to be cozy affairs. The weather is humid, but mild, so the homes tend to gather lots of garden around them. Here are some examples.

The road to some Portland homes. It was the most photogenic tree-lined road I have seen in years.

Yes, there is a house in all those flowers.
The backyard angel. This angel lived in the backyard of the home where I was staying in Portland.
