Visions of 2051
Brave New Wearables

by Roger Bourke White Jr., copyright May 2016

This, 2nd in the series of Visions books, focuses on the difference wearables are going to make in how we live.

commodity uses

surprise uses & thinking changes

First generation effects

Monitoring vital signs

becoming part of clothing

becoming part of fashion? (This is happening already, tattoos selected by smartphone, at least in Facebook video)

fast alerts when there is an overt crisis

helping with health by close monitoring, leading to fast alerts... and any intervention?

helping with "quant" activities by close monitoring. Controversy over any intervening done, similar to drug/doping at Olympics, etc.

how would they help with fashion? Change appearance of clothing, change appearance of tattoos? animated hair? glowing eyes?

less guessing about state of health

less guessing about effectiveness of cures, more customizing and fast adjusting of drugs

changes in health rituals, but people will still want rituals

faster, simpler drug approvals? This will depend on ritual as well as effectiveness.

still lots of instinct and opinions in health care issues

Second generation effects

Controlling vital signs

Controlling hormones by controlling hormone making glands

What is 2nd generation in fashion?

Enhancing the five senses, and more?

fast alerts when there is a subtle crisis

wearables assisting in administering drugs

wearables replacing some drugs by controlling hormone making glands

controlling sleep and appetite cycles (what other cycles?)

better sensory perception of many sorts? Wow! This opens lots of possibilities.

new forms of mind altering

controlling pleasure feelings

controlling fear feelings

faster on & off mind altering, plus more subtle adjusting

how will this change social thinking about mind altering?

lots of personal expression in mind altering, a whole lot, which means traditional won't go away

Third generation effects

Controlling autonomic nerves

Shaping the body as a person grows up, literally, shaping proportions, skin textures

know another person's emotions by wearables intercommunicating, less guessing needed... hmm... humans read body language real well already, doing better could be a tricky task

cooling down heated arguments by wearables mutually interacting to control emotions

affecting stereotype thinking in some way? As in, making this less influential? Or, picking which stereotype this other person will seem to fit.

bright side: help cyber muses inspire

dark side: new form of propaganda

affecting social shaming... how?

Given all of the above, what will humans still be thinking about? What parts of their thinking will they still control? Not easy to forecast.

Part of the answer to this is: What jobs will humans have?

The low-skill TES-embeded jobs are easy to visualize, Top 40 Jobs, but the high-skill new style jobs are hard to forecast. My example of how hard: in 1900 forecasting that engine repair would be a plentiful high-skill job in 1940, when in 1900 horses are still the main form of medium and heavy, non-steam powered, transportation.
