"Undressing! In class!" thought Soo Young. It made sense... in a sort of crazy way. And this class certainly was all about crazy! She talked with Raven Lee about it.

Ravel Lee smiled, "I'll have to check with the rest of the coven and Mr. Thorne. If it's not OK, I'll give you a call. If you don't hear from me, come over about 7PM. We start with dinner, talk and watch a movie together to get warm and cuddly, then get into the fun stuff. Expect to be totally naked in front of Mr. Thorne," she smiled again, "and he'll be totally naked in front of you."

You'll find out why she is a guest a bit later," Raven Lee looked at Nora... admiringly? enviously? Soo Young wasn't sure. Then she continued, "We'll start when Mr. Thorne finishes with his consulting. In the meantime, have a seat in the living room and get acquainted."
"He's here now? What does he consult on?"
"Oh, he knows so much about so many things! He comes about noon, has lunch, and mentors us until dinner time. We talk about our projects at work and he gives advice. When dinner time comes we all kick back and relax... and start having some touchy-feely fun," She smiles at that thought.
"Wow! This coven business keeps him real busy."
Raven Lee nodded, "And he does this with all the covens," then she confided, "I think your's may be the last, for a while at least. This is keeping him so busy now."
Soo Young didn't have to make small talk for long before Mr. Thorne came out of the meeting room. He was smiling and a couple of the women came out with him and stole kisses. He smiled even more at that and took a bathroom break. While he was doing that the dining room was transformed from meeting room to eating room.
When he came out again, Raven Lee introduced him to Soo Young. He smiled at her and shook her hand, "You're the teacher in the advanced class, right? I hope things are going well there. They seem to be. You're doing a fine job," and that said, he headed for the dining room saying to everyone, "You women have worked me to the bone... the skull bone! Now I'm hungry as a bear!"
Soo Young was surprised that here he was treating her like just another person, an acquaintance, almost a stranger. He didn't fondle her, or leer at her, or twist her arms behind her and tie her up. He just shook hands and moved on. Clearly she was not at the top of his attention stack right now.

Raven Lee sat next to her when she finished cleaning up.

The weekend comes and Soo Young shops at the mall. She's in the food court when a strange man and woman come up an introduce themselves.
"I'm Richard Henley and this is Mildred Bryce. We're from the state Child Protective Services and the State Board of Education. May we join you for a moment?"
This was out of the blue for Soo Young, but she said, "Sure."
They seated themselves and started right in.
"We heard from people at the Acme Academy were you previously worked that you are now with the Thorne Academy. Is that true?"
"Yes."
They smiled at each other.
"The Thorne Academy is something of a cipher to us. Our departments look after children, and the Thorne academy has both an orphanage and a school. The orphanage we inspect regularly, but we don't have access to the academy. The academy is not in any town jurisdiction so there's no Board of Education monitoring it. Legally, it's like an overgrown home study group. This has us concerned. There are a lot of kids there, but we know little about the academy. We'd like your help in finding out more."
"What would you like me to do?"
"Oh, it's pretty simple. We'd like you to be our eyes and ears there. If you see or hear about things that we should know about -- rule violating things -- let us know so we can investigate further. We will, of course, keep your name out of whatever investigations come up."
"Why are you talking with me?"
"We're trying to develop some informal contacts within the academy. Most of the teachers and administrators are home-grown and a tight-lipped lot. You're a newcomer and an outsider. So... we're talking."
Soo Young thinks, then says, "OK. I'll do what I can to help." It seems like the most diplomatic answer at this point.
Henley and Bryce give her cards, then move on. Soo Young thinks about this, but not for long, when she gets back to the academy she tells Alana about the incident.
"Oh dear! But... I guess I'm not surprised. We cooperate with those people as much as necessary, but there are some who have a grudge against us.
"To give you some background, Mr. Thorne has friends in the state legislature, powerful friends. Before he set this complex up he secretly bought the property and then had this declared a special taxing district. We are, in effect, our own county. It's much like what the Disneys did when they decided they wanted a Disneyland in Florida.
"But some people watch us carefully and are both interested and worried about the kids we raise. We have some failures, as all educating facilities do, but when these concerned people hear about our failures they don't shrug them off, they want to intervene.
"So... yes... These people are asking you to spy for them," she smiles, "It's your choice as to how to deal with them. I recommend talking to them as little as you can, and keep me posted when you do. But, it really is your choice."
"I suppose they would be very interested in what's happening in Mr. Thorne's special class. I don't mean this as a threat, or anything, I'm just trying to understand."
Alana pauses for a bit, "Yes, in these times that class would be of great interest to them. The moral panic and prescriptive feelings about how children and women should be treated have grown so much!
"So please keep in mind that your class is an experiment. We are trying to find better ways to raise our children. And you're very much a part of that experiment. Please keep that in mind, and let me know if those two continue to pester you. As I said, Mr. Thorne has powerful friends, and for a decade he has been effective at dealing with problems like snoopy inspectors."
And that ended the meeting.
