Short Tales of Technofiction
2014 and earlier
Technofiction is Roger's branch of Science Fiction in which
the emphasis is telling a good story by describing surprising ways that people interact with technology.
My five favorites
- The Ticket Out -- My version of Heinlein's
Starship Troopers theme. Power Armored mercenaries get stranded after
an invasion goes sour. (Apr 05)
- The Only Living Person in New York -- How do
you abandon New York City without leaving a smoking ruin? This is one
way. (Nov 08)
- Intelitan the Destructor -- Interstellar
combat with a war machine that's gone out of control... but with a technofiction
twist. (Aug 02)
- Wilderness 2053 -- Keeping our
wildernesses pristine, and enjoying them at the same time. This is how
we will do it. (Aug 02)
- The Failure -- A story of mankind
creating a new species, in a surprising way. (Aug 02)
First contact with aliens stories
- The First Starship -- What happens when the first interstellar traders come to the solar system? (May 07)
- The Colonists -- Most space travel
science fiction presumes some form of faster-than-light travel. This
is another story of what space commerce is like when only slower than light
technology is available. (Jan 05)
- And where does the 500 pound Alien Sleep? -- A first encounter story with a really scary alien, taking place far from Earth. (Apr 04)
Power armor stories
- The Ticket Out -- My version of Heinlein's
Starship Troopers theme. Power Armored mercenaries get stranded after
an invasion goes sour. (Apr 05)
- Power Armor -- An action/adventure
story in the form of an Interstellar Agent making his report to a power
armor equipment maker. (Jan 04)
Space stories from the robot's point of view
- Intelitan the Destructor -- Interstellar
combat with a war machine that's gone out of control... but with a technofiction
twist. (Aug 02)
- I am of Man -- A first encounter
story between a hostile alien and a robotic "creation" of mankind.
(It is through creations that I envision most space exploration
taking place.) (Aug 02)
Humans on Earth stories
- The Only Living Person in New York -- How do
you abandon New York City without leaving a smoking ruin? This is one
way. (with a sequel) (Nov 08)
- Man's Pride -- Life is always full of little
surprises... and some not-so-little ones, too. As discovered by this
wet-behind-the-ears MBA of the future. (Nov 03, Honorable Mention
in Writers of the Future contest 2007)
- The Immortals -- What would happen
if an immortal alien came to Earth? What difference would it make to our world?
Here is one possibility. (Nov 03)
- Beware Bargain Boards! -- A fun short
cautionary tall tale from the early days of personal computers. (Aug 02)
- The Failure -- A story of mankind
creating a new species, in a surprising way. (Aug 02)
- Wilderness 2053 -- Keeping our
wildernesses pristine, and enjoying them at the same time. This is how
we will do it. (Aug 02)
- Super Spy Weekend -- When we have android super spies, who's going to have a Super Spy Weekend? (Jan 13)
Humans on distant planets stories
Distant Future, Distant Past Stories
- Team Macedonia -- What if the time travelers
who want to change history are shy? (May 06)
- Witch of Devil's Rock -- What happens when
an intelligent parasite infests dawn-of-agriculture humans? (Jul 05)
- The Bag -- Homo sapiens will not always
be the Earth's keeper. The story of an astounding archeological discovery
of the future. (Feb 05)
- The Domes -- After you say, "Oops!"
what do you do? The story of a people dealing with a world-shattering
biotechnology accident. (Jan 05)
Fan Fiction
- Return to Pandora -- This story was inspired by watching the movie Avatar and being so disappointed in the story. I'm starting from the conclusion of that wreck of a story, and telling a better one. (Jan 10)
