Chapter Five: Dealing with the Mars Crisis

Our planning showed us that the key to ending the chaos quickly was the Old Mars faction. If they came out solidly against the violence of the radical Earth Firsters, then taking action to end the chaos and violence would be fruitful. Galvanizing the Old Mars faction into making a choice was the main reason we pulled out early. The reason this commitment from the Old Mars faction was so important goes back to Mr. Flemming, the corrupt police officer. The underlying chaos could not be stopped, but there were technologies that could help minimize the violence... if they were properly used. Mr. Flemming had clearly demonstrated that misuse was likely, and most likely if opinion about the proper end state of affairs was divided. Mr. Flemming was corrupt because just about the same number of people wanted the smuggling to continue as wanted the smuggling to end. We did not want to support another Mr. Flemming, so we would not get involved until the Old Mars faction came out vigorously against Earth First violence.

Things went as we hoped. Three months after we pulled the colonists off Mars, the steadily increasing violence brought a delegation from the Old Martians to our ship in orbit around Mars, and peace was planned.

We had the technology to stop the violence, once the Martian community decided decisively that it wanted the violence stopped. It was a straightforward adaptation of ship way management technique: if you're going to change plans quickly, you must know what the plans are. The radical Earth Firsters were coming to Mars to partake in various ship way spawned projects. It was not hard to analyze who were the "bad apples" and point them out to the Martian authorities.

In return for helping to end the violence, the Martians agreed to let colonists join the Martian community and spread the benefits of ship technology even further and faster than before. That coordination between our crew and the Mars government was the key step that both communities now recognize as the beginning of my rise to power within the Solar System community.
