Chapter Six: Becoming Teachers instead of Traders

What happened after that was essentially a repeating of this cycle in other Solar System communities. As mankind took more and more advantage of what we had to offer, it first caused unrest and chaos. We were there to help channel that unrest and chaos away from community-damaging violence and into making this Solar System a better place for mankind and colonist. But, we could only help when the community decided that it no longer wanted to tolerate the violence that rapid technology assimilation was causing. Earth invited us to help out fifteen years after Mars did.

A big surprise for me, personally, was that Earth came under our protection before Titan Colony did. In fact, to this day, I'm still surprised that Titan Colony is as obstinately independent as it is -- we protect them, but they have never had serious unrest, and have never invited colonists to coordinate with their government in the way we do on Earth and Mars. I guess that's because they became acclimated to rapidly assimilating technology so early in their history. It meant that our coming was not so novel to them as it was to the rest of the Solar System.

Once colonists were settling on Earth, the space ship project began in earnest. This was tremendously exciting for both colonist and Solar System person. We now build, populate and launch ten ships a year destined for interstellar trade! Incredible! And that figure is likely to grow to fifty in twenty years. The Solar System: a major center for spawning interstellar commerce. Who would have imagined it?

So, that's my story. That's how I became Emperor of Earth and Protector of the Solar System. It happened because I, and my follow crew members, offered a way for the Solar System to become a better place for mankind and colonist alike -- a much better place. I've come a long way from being a hotelier on Doan U-Beleevit, but... in truth... I think I'm still in the same business: the business of making a person's stay at my lodging a wonderful experience. My lodging has just... grown a bit.
